Rang is built to need as little as possible. This page says what it keeps, why, and who can see it.
No account to create
When you first open Rang, it creates an account for you with no email, password, or phone number of yours; the app keeps its own random credentials in your phone's keychain. If you choose to sign in with Apple, that identity is attached to the same account so you can get back in on a new phone. Apple may share your name with us; we use it only to fill in your display name if you haven't set one.
What Rang stores
- Your name, as you typed it. Shown only to members of your groups.
- The loved one's name and phone number, entered by whoever starts the group. The number is stored so the app can dial it and so people can join; it is shown only to members of that group. The loved one is never contacted by Rang and has no account.
- Your photo, one per group, if you add one. Shown only to members of that group.
- Call confirmations. When you tell Rang you had a call, it records that you did and when. Other members see only the group's most recent call time, never who called or how often. That record exists so your own reminder knows when you last called.
- Your reminder settings, timezone, and a push notification token, so reminders arrive at the time you chose.
- Join attempts (which account tried which code, and when), kept for a week to stop guessing.
What Rang does not do
- It does not read your call history, contacts, or the phone number you call. iOS does not allow it, and Rang doesn't ask.
- It does not show anyone who calls a lot or a little. There are no scores, streaks, or statistics.
- It does not run analytics, advertising, or tracking of any kind.
- It does not sell or share your data with anyone.
Where it lives
Data is stored on a server we run, and push notifications are delivered through Expo's notification service and Apple. Each sees only what it needs to do its job.
Deleting your data
Settings has a Delete account button. It removes your account, your photos, and your memberships immediately. If you were the last member of a group, the group and its details are deleted too. You can also leave any single group from settings.
Children
Rang is for adults organising calls to a family member. It is not directed at children under 13.
